The Promised One: Seeing Jesus in Genesis (A 10-week Bible Study) (Volume 1) Paperback – July 7, 2011
Purchase options and add-ons
“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, [Jesus] interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” (Luke 24:27)
After the resurrection, when Jesus used Scripture to explain who he was and why he came, where did he start? In the Old Testament. And this is where The Promised One begins to look for Christ, finding him in the people, promises, and patterns of the Old Testament scriptures.
With contagious passion and theological soundness, Bible teacher Nancy Guthrie shows how the book of Genesis points us to the person of Christ. Throughout ten weeks of guided personal study, relevant teaching, and thoughtful discussion questions, The Promised One will help you:
- make new discoveries of Jesus as seen in the shadows of the Old Testament;
- apply the gospel found in Genesis to issues such as shame, fear, and the desire for security and significance;
- develop your longing for what is ahead when the world is once again made new.
Gain a fresh perspective on the book of Genesis, a broader understanding of Jesus as the fulfillment of Scripture, and much more, when you join with Nancy on this incredible journey to see Jesus in the Old Testament!
Part of the Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament series.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“The perfect blend of biblical scholarship and heartfelt passion, Guthrie guides us through Genesis, helping us discover for ourselves God’s magnificent plan of redemption. Her steps are sure, and her grasp of the Scriptures is breathtaking. Above all, God’s unfailing love, grace, and sovereignty shine forth from every page. A brilliant start to a very promising series.”
―Liz Curtis Higgs, New York Times best-selling author, Mine is the Night and Bad Girls of the Bible
“An excellent resource for the church. Nancy explains biblical connections in a way that will be helpful to new believers as well as those steeped in the faith. I wish I had these resources years ago.”
―Wendy Horger Alsup, teacher; blogger; author, Is the Bible Good for Women? and Practical Theology for Women
“The Bible is a book about Jesus. The disciples walking to Emmaus after the resurrection discovered this as Christ himself walked along with them and explained how the Old Testament pointed to the Savior. This book is the first in an important series by Nancy Guthrie and it spotlights how Jesus can be seen in the book of Genesis. I recommend this―and the entire series―to you.”
―Alistair Begg, Senior Pastor, Parkside Church, Chagrin Falls, Ohio
“It’s not hyperbole to say, ‘It’s about time.’ While there are good books out there telling pastors how to preach Christ from all the Scriptures, there have been very few Bible studies for laypeople―especially for women―along these lines. Nancy Guthrie does an amazing job of helping us to fit the pieces of the biblical puzzle together, with Christ at the center.”
―Michael Horton, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California
“Nancy takes us by the hand and the heart on an exegetical excursion to see Christ in the Old Testament…the beauty of Guthrie’s writing is that you are certain she has met him there first.”
―Jean F. Larroux, Former Senior Pastor, Southwood Presbyterian Church, PCA, Huntsville, Alabama
“Every leader of small group ministries knows the difficult task of finding good material―material that causes participants to think carefully while striking a chord in the heart; material that challenges the mature Christian, while gently leading those younger in the faith into deeper truths; material that digs into the Bible and applies its treasures to our everyday lives. The Promised One manages to do it all! A meaningful, 10-week Bible study with thought-provoking questions and solid teaching, and a peek at what is still to come. I am delighted to offer this to the women in my church and look forward to the remaining books in this series.”
―Jean Bronson, Director of Women’s Ministry, Fourth Presbyterian Church, Bethesda, Maryland
“There are many great Christian books, but not many great Bible studies. Nancy is a master of getting the Word of God into the mouths, hearts, and lives of her students. I cannot wait to share this study with my people.”
―Donna Dobbs, Women and Children’s Ministry Director, First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, Mississippi
“How many of us have grown up in the church, learning and reciting one Bible story after the other? But how many of us can clearly connect those stories with clarity and understanding of the grand drama? The Promised One will lead this generation to clearly recognize that the Bible is God’s purposeful story―an amazing unfolding of His promised provision through Jesus, His Son, for the redemption of our wrecked and ruined world. Through this life-changing study, you will clearly comprehend God’s intent and promise of Jesus from the very first pages of the Bible through to the very end. I pray your eyes and mind will joyfully recognize Him as the Promised One, making your heart burn with a deeper and more passionate love for the Savior!”
―Jennifer Adamson, Former Director of Women’s Ministries, First Baptist Orlando, Orlando, Florida
“Do you ever wish you could have listened to the conversation Jesus had with his friends on the road to Emmaus? Luke tells us that Jesus started with Moses and walked his way through the Bible and explained to them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures. Nancy has done us all a great service by carefully and precisely unpacking the teachings regarding our Savior in the Old Testament. My experience with this book has been rich and has deepened my love for the Word and for Jesus. I am in debt to my sister for this treasure of a study!”
―David Arthur, CEO, Precept Ministries International; coauthor, Desiring God’s Own Heart: A Study on Samuel
“After nearly a decade of serving women in the church, I have to say that finding Bible study curriculum that compels women to fall in love with God’s Word is perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of this job. Promotions for women’s materials fill my mailbox and my inbox daily, yet rarely have I found a curriculum so well written. The Promised One is full of truth, humility, and grace. Nancy leads us to the Scriptures where we find there to be one story, that of our Lord Jesus. I am so grateful for this series and I am certain it will help women come to know Christ and know Him better.”
―Kari Stainback, Director of Women’s Ministries, Park Cities Presbyterian Church, Dallas, Texas
“Is there a need for another study guide on Genesis? In a word, yes. And this is the book. Sadly, most studies are not Christ-centered, but rather principle-centered, which becomes nothing more than a new version of legalism. Nancy Guthrie sets a new standard by being truly Christ-centered, starting with Jesus’ fulfillment of the entire Old Testament and maintaining that focus throughout the guide. Having read three of her previous books, and the Christ-centered nature of them, I expected the same top-notch quality. I was not disappointed. The proven format of personal study, teaching chapter, and group discussion highlights Christ as the center of Genesis. Her questions are not merely ‘how-to’ guides, but they bring a fresh perspective and point the reader continually to Christ. Do you want to study or teach Genesis? Then this book is for you. Guthrie has provided a valuable resource of the church.”
―Richard P. Shields, Professor, American Lutheran Theological Seminary
“Because the stories of Genesis are so familiar to many, it can be easy to think we don’t need to study it again. But The Promised One enables us to read all of the familiar stories with fresh eyes so that God’s redemptive purposes through Christ from the very beginning become clear. I look forward to putting this study in the hands of the women at my church!”
―Julie Wesselman, Former Women’s Ministry Director, Desert Springs Church, Albuquerque, New Mexico
“At last! Real living water from Scripture that enables us, together, to behold the Lord Jesus in His glory―this is what nourishes and matures the soul! The expositions in Genesis, the development in Scripture, the fulfillment in our Lord Jesus Christ, and then the bridge to application to now and to the blessings yet to come when all meets the final consummation in glory. So well done. O I pray Nancy’s book, as well as the series, ignites a fire that blazes from here to the Third World and strengthens all Christians everywhere to come alive in our testimony of Jesus.”
―Thaddeus Barnum, Assisting Bishop, Diocese of the Carolinas; author, Never Silent

About the author
“God has been preparing me my whole life for teaching his Word,” says Nancy Guthrie. “He has blessed me with so many sound Bible teachers to sit under—from my days as a college student in Bible classes, to amazing Sunday School teachers, Bible Study Fellowship teaching leaders, gifted pastors at my church, Cornerstone Presbyterian Church —as well as teachers and preachers from all over the world that I listen to and learn from online.”
But Nancy says the most important thing God has given her is a love for him and for his Word. “To me, Gods Word is a treasure to be mined,” she says. “The deeper I go, the more I see its wisdom, the more it authenticates itself, the more it reveals to me the beauty of God’s plan to redeem all things through Christ.”
Nancy’s life experience has also significantly affected her teaching. “I’ve had to dig into God’s Word in search of answers to hard questions about God and how he works, and I find that my readers or listeners usually have the same struggles and questions. And while I share openly the deep hurts in my life, I also like to laugh. I often have people who hear me teach say that I'm very real. That’s what I want to be."
Nancy and her husband, David, have a thirty-year-old son, Matt, who works with his dad creating kids musicals for the church through Little Big Stuff Music. They also have a daughter, Hope, and a son, Gabriel, who were born with a rare genetic disorder called Zellweger Syndrome and each lived six months.
Nancy offered many of the lessons she learned from the loss of two of their children in her first book, Holding On to Hope: A Pathway of Suffering to the Heart of God which was published in 2002. Since then, Nancy has continued to write books that reflect her compassion for hurting people and her passion for applying God's Word to real life. Her desire to grow in her understanding of God's Word has prompted her to pursue graduate work in theological studies via Reformed Theological Seminary Global. She and her husband, David, host weekend Respite Retreats for couples who have faced the death of a child. She speaks regularly at conferences nationally and internationally, and is a regular contributor to The Gospel Coalition including hosting the Help Me Teach the Bible podcast.
Most recently, Nancy has been focused on her mission to infiltrate women’s Bible study in the local church with biblical theology. “I regularly have women who have worked their way through all five of my Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament Bible Study series tell me that those studies helped them to see connections in the Bible they had never seen before. And that thrills me,” says Nancy. She wrote Even Better Than Eden to take women a step further into understanding some of the major themes than run from Genesis to Revelation in the Bible. And in the Biblical Theology Workshops for Women she is now offering around the country and internationally, she is training women how to trace these themes for themselves. “The workshops are energetic and fun and women leave telling me that their minds are spinning with all they’ve learned and their hearts are warmed by seeing Christ in new ways. Nothing could make me happier.”
Nancy and her husband, David, make their home in Nashville, Tennessee where, according to Nancy, life is less about professional pursuits than about the ordinary aspects of being a wife, mother, friend, and follower of Jesus, with clothes to wash, e-mails to answer, and a friend to listen to.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2022Nancy Guthrie has become one of my favorite Bible teachers. Her work is rich with truth and still relatable and impactful. I leave each chapter with a deeper appreciation for Jesus and the beauty of the cross and the Bible as a whole, which speaks of Him! If you’ve ever struggled to see Jesus in the classic Bible stories you grew up hearing, you will not be disappointed with this book. I have done this study alone, but it’s also great to do with a small group. The personal Bible study component does require some time, but I assume that if you’re hungry to see Jesus in Scripture, this will be a refreshing journey. Take your time with it. Christ will meet you here!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2024The book is very interesting so far. Great for when I am studying the bible
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2018I was led to this book by a gal who appreciated Francine Rivers (Christian fiction: Mark of The Lion) as much as I do. I did not know what to expect but my Bible Study group had read several books/studies and we needed a new one.
We are now almost done with this first volume and it has blown me away. Nancy Guthrie has an amazing gift, and she IS a gift for writing this study. The women in my study are all different Christian denominations, all have strong faith, and have studied together for several years. The last study we did was on the entire book of Genesis and thought that we had it all figured out.....until we read this! Nancy has revealed so much more to us than we were prepared for, and it has been such an awesome surprise. She sticks to scripture, and goes deep into the layers to reveal things that are often overlooked / you may have otherwise missed! Her "Teaching Chapters" inside each chapter are gold! We are definitely moving to Volume II next.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2017If you are looking to study the Bible deeply then look no further. This book will help take you on a journey to learn more about Genesis than you ever thought possible. It is well written and everything is presented in a very easy to read fashion. My Bible study group was already on Exodus when I started attending it so I decided to do this on my own and I am truly enjoying the experience. God is my Bible study partner and who could possibly ask for a better partner?
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2017Our woman's group is using this book in our bible study. It is so rewarding. Nancy has a way of revealing Jesus in the OT that touches our heads and hearts. We are learning about the book of Genesis in a brand new perspective. We dig deep into what happened at the time and then follow the life of Christ right through Revelation. Some of us are long time bible students and some are just starting their first study. It works for all of us. We plan on continuing with Nancy's series
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2016This is a wonderful bible study. Many women's bible studies are topical based on a women's issue or often men's and women's studies focus on application what the scripture means to me. Also many studies will jump around picking and choosing verses. This study does not do that at all. This study does just what the title says. It covers a section in a certain book of the Old testiment and has the reader dig deep into God's words. She does a great job pointing out how all scripture points to Christ and she teaches is how to find that ourselves instead of spoon feeding us. The questions asked are challenging and the answers are found in the passages just read. Also when she does jump to other scriptures they are often New Testiment ones that go right along with the Old Testiment passage that we are reading. We never have to worry that we will get a moralist message or a waterdown gospel. The sins of the Old testiment characters are made known, God's holiness is shown and Christ as the only hope is made known.
The set up is you read the verses and or chapters, then answer questions at home and then go in meet with a group to watch the video and answer more group question out loud as a group. The only negative is the book has a section that you are to read after answering the questions, but the video is just about word for word of that. So I won't be reading and listening to the same thing I just skip the reading part. If your women do not have 2 hours to do this study I would say don't watch the video just stick with discussing the questions you did at home and the group questions.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2023What a great series, perfect for small group study.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2022If you ever wanted to put more time into the Old Testament this is a good book to start with.
